Inside Line: First Drive: 2005 Nissan Frontier - Baby Brother Grows Up
When Nissan decided to redesign its Frontier pickup, it scrapped the tired, old platform and started fresh. The 2005 Nissan Frontier doesn't have a single part carried over from 2004. Smart move since new midsize pickups from Dodge and Toyota have recently raised the bar. Stepping up to the Nissan Frontier LE adds foglamps, cruise control, keyless entry, power-adjustable driver seat, power windows and door locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, compass and trip computer and an overhead console.

PickupTruck.Com - First Drive: 2005 Nissan Frontier
The Nissan Frontier is the fifth completely redesigned compact pickup truck to hit the market within the last year. It follows some heavy hitters, including the big Dodge Dakota and hot-selling Toyota Tacoma, both of which were introduced in the fall of 2004 as 2005 models. The GM siblings, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, came out as 2004 models a year earlier. The only other compact trucks on the market are the sales-leading Ford Ranger and its Mazda clone, the B-Series pickup. Both ride on an old platform that by all accounts won't be redesigned until at least 2009. The Ranger used to outsell the nearest competitor by almost 2-to-1, but the Toyota Tacoma could overtake the Ford this year as the best-selling compact truck.

Better saddle up Nissan and their little upstart Frontier truck. The redesigned 2005 Nissan Frontier is a rock solid pickup that handles highways and washed-out ravines with equal pluck, a truck with power and poise that's destined to handily compete with the Toyota Tacoma and Dodge Dakota for its share of the mid-size territory. First introduced in 1998, the Frontier draws its genealogy from the revered Nissan Hardbody pickups of the late '80s, at least up until now. Now the Frontier is based on the same F-Alpha platform as the full-size Titan pickup, Pathfinder SUV and upcoming Xterra sport-ute, landing it squarely between compact and full-size - the place where most serious competitors in the smaller truck segment seem to be playing today. This ain't your Daddy's Chevy LUV - in fact, it's more a mini-Titan, a beefy truck that can haul, tow, go off-road and perform all the tasks a full-sizer must, but in a more compact and urban-friendly size. Who cares about things like gas mileage and comfort when you've got a boulder to climb or a wash to run - especially in an off-road vehicle as adept at articulation and climbing as the 2005 Nissan Frontier? Off-road features include shift on-the-fly 4WD, a four-wheel limited slip differential system, an electronic locking rear differential, Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). On a 30-minute course of rocks, ravines, steep climbs and sudden descents, the Frontier stayed in control, thanks to the fully-boxed F-Alpha frame, exceptional Bilstein off-road shocks, and the HDC - which controls engine braking and keeps the vehicle at a steady 5-7 mph while in steep descent without using the brakes. The electronic locking rear differential and remarkable undercarriage clearance also contribute to the Frontier's prowess. Though Nissan upsized the Frontier, its larger dimensions didn't hurt its off-road performance. Longer, wider and higher than the previous version, the 2005 Nissan Frontier is both easy to maneuver and more comfortable than before. In fact, it should come in second to the Dakota in terms of overall size in the segment, and when compared to the Toyota Tacoma, the 2005 Frontier is slightly larger in almost all critical areas - including an extra two inches of additional hip room. Those two inches make a difference, as the Frontier is a very comfortable truck. Doors, front and back, are large and easy to handle, and close with a reassuring thunk. Seating is sturdy and configurations include flip-up back seats for storage and fold-flat front passenger seats on all but leather-trimmed models.
