Hyundai's smallest SUV, the Tucson, is nearly the same size as the company's largest, the Santa Fe. To fix that, Hyundai will grow the next-generation Santa Fe to compete with the Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano. The new Santa Fe will be based on a platform shared with the next Hyundai Sonata and will be large enough to have three rows of seating. The new sheetmetal ditches the frumpy look of the current SUV in favor of more style. Recently, Subaru unveiled the STi version of the popular WRX sedan, boasting even more power, more grip and more fun. Apparently, the WRX won't be the only STi model for long. The next Subarus to wear the STi performance badge will be the Legacy sedans and wagons, which will be redesigned within two years. Built to compete against cars such as the Audi A4 and BMW M3, the high-performance Legacy is rumored to produce upward of 350 hp from a twin-turbocharged version of the company's 4-cylinder opposed engine. And because it's a Subaru, that power will be channeled through all four wheels. The new Legacy will have sleeker sheetmetal for all models.

"It wasn't easy, and it took time," is the succinct answer from Jack Collins, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America when asked how Nissan has been transformed from a company on the critical list to one that's turning out an array of important products. The turnaround began after Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn arrived from Renault, and set about rationalizing Nissan's vehicle lineup. It didn't take long, Collins claims, for the product planning groups to differentiate the brands by powertrain layout, with Nissan producing predominately front-drive cars, and Infiniti rear-drive vehicles. Those meetings, say Nissan insiders, are not top-down mandates, but detailed presentations of the vehicle, the buyer, the costs involved, and how the goal can be reached. "Ghosn expects you to present your decision, not ask him to make it for you," says a Nissan engineer. "And you'd better be prepared to defend your assumptions with strong numbers.
