The AA:
Fist seen in 1951, the Nissan Patrol has been crushing rocks and scaling mountains for over half a century. There are no bones about the fact that this is a 4x4 through and through and it makes no concessions to the soft-roader set of recent years. To use an old footballing cliche, the Patrol's driving personality is very much a game of two halves. Off-road it reigns supreme, crushing all before it and never emitting so much as a groan from its ladder-frame chassis. Ditches, ravines, gorges, boulders, chasms, you name it and the Patrol will shrug it off as if it were a puddle in a supermarket car park. On-road, however, things are less accomplished. Get those stepladders ready - at 185cm tall the Patrol does require something of a leap up. Side steps are provided, but the less limber and more mature will still struggle to scale these dizzy heights. The door openings (if you can reach them) are wide and welcoming and easily negotiable.
Telegraph Motoring Please, no nonsense
However, over the next few months, Nissan aims to treble its 4x4 sales in the UK. Early next year, the Murano arrives to compete against the Lexus RX300 and BMW X5 and, next spring, the seven-seater Pathfinder takes on Volvo's XC90 and the Land Rover Discovery.
Overlander 4WD :: Vehicle Tests
When Overlander awarded the 1999 4WDOTY to Nissan Pathfinder, it did so for a very good reason. The Pathfinder is a decent medium-sized 4WD, with plenty of grunt when needed and solid, predictable on-road manners. It also has the added bonus of being roomy enough for a small family, and has room enough for a decent amount of luggage as well. Take a trip to the bush and its becoming obvious that the Toyota tray-back doesnt have the market all to itself anymore. This tried and proven farm truck has fresh competition from the Nissan Patrol and Ford F250, but more and more weve noticed that its the Nissan thats doing duty on the land. Nissan's GU Patrol is a beast of a vehicle if not anything else. Its sheer size and power make it one of the best vehicles available for long distance touring, transporting the family on holidays or towing a trailer of any kind. For interior capacity, only Toyota's LandCruiser comes close and few 4WD engines produce more power than the GU's latest 4800, inline six cylinder petrol engine.

Just as Toyota has its granddaddy Landcruiser Amazon, so Nissan has its own giant. Its not nearly as big as the Amazon but it certainly feels it to drive. This is an old-school off-roader, big and tough and extremely durable. Just dont expect much in the way of comfort or good road manners in and out of town. The Patrol GR was revised in 2004.
Nissan New Zealand - News - Local News
True to the design blueprint, the 2005 Patrol delivers luxury, comfort and genuine four wheel drive capability in spades. Central to the new-look 2005 Patrol are the extensive external changes that go well beyond what's expected of a conventional facelift. In fact, every panel except the roof is new and the changes don't just bring a fresh and contemporary style to the Patrol but also underline its tough off-road heritage. From the front, the revised bumper has a smoother, more integrated feel with a separate vented centre section. As well as improving the looks, the centre section permits a greater flow of cooling air to reach the engine, and is angled to enhance the Patrol's already excellent approach angle. Sitting on top of the new bumper is a new grille. Despite the addition of numerous interior appointments, the 2005 Patrol remains as tough and as capable as ever. That's because the chassis and 4x4 transmission systems have been left alone: it will still climb a 39-degree gradient and wade through 700mm of water.

Loved by UN peacekeepers, the Patrol is probably best left to the warzones that seem its natural habitat. It's enormously tough and almost unstoppable in the rough, but unrefined on normal roads. Ride quality is poor and handling is stodgy and sometimes vague. The 160bhp turbo-diesel engine tries hard, but it can't motivate so much car more than very slowly. And the Patrol's enormous width makes it a nightmare to guide down narrow country lanes or urban streets.
Nissan PATROL GR SERIES Review – Yahoo Cars UK
Whilst the Patrol may well be built to last, many owners try hard to test this fact. They often lead a hard life. Off road driving is a punishing activity and many Patrols will also have been used to tow caravans, boats and the like. Also check for evidence of fuel leaks, a sticking differential lock and corrosion around the tailgate. Inspect the exhaust, wheel arch liners, suspension and chassis and for damage caused whilst off roading and get to know the history of the vehicle in question. As a favourite tool of ram raiders in the nineties, the model was dubbed the Nissan Parole by the tabloid press. On the handling front, Nissan is also keen to emphasise the merits of its clever switchable stabiliser bar. Operating on the back axle, this limits body roll at high speeds without compromising the times when you need body movement - articulation through the rough. You simply activate the system (via a dashboard button) for road use and switch it off once you leave the tarmac.
Nissan Patrol GQ - 4WD
The GQ was the first Nissan Patrol with coil springs, released in Australia in 1988. The standard coils sag and limit axle movement, but a GQ Patrol with after-market springs can be quite agile. The one pictured (left) has had a 45mm body lift, new springs and has 33" tyres fitted.
