Open the bonnet and underneath you will see the intercooler, which is the reason for the car's small animal vacuum. Unfortunately the size of the Pulsar engine bay meant Nissan couldn't fit an intercooler down in front, like on the U13 Bluebird Turbo. This meant that the intercooler couldn't operate it's best because of the hot engine below, but it did mean the GTi-R had one fearsome image in a rear view mirror. The engine is the trusty SR20 turbo featuring quad throttle bodies.

A more angular version was announced in mid-1982. This model was also built in Italy by Alfa Romeo as the Arna (named after the joint venture which created it, Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli), using Alfa Romeo engines. Confusingly, the Italian models were also sold with Nissan badges, in Japan as the Nissan Pulsar Milano and in Europe as the Nissan Cherry Europe. At Alfa Romeo, the Arna was meant to replace lesser versions of the popular Alfasud, but never had the Italian car's appeal. In 1986, with Nissan's design chief refusing to follow the smooth, aerodynamic look of other companies, and a squarer Pulsar (N13 series) was released. Innovations included a four-wheel-drive model. The PulsarAstra relationship continued in Australia, with the Langley sold as the Pulsar there and the four-door sedan version of the Nissan called the Vector. The EXA was spun off into its own line, with an innovative modular rear end: customers could opt for a coupe, hatchback or an open-top car depending on what they put on. This version of the EXA was available in North America under the name Pulsar NX and was sold from 1987 to 1990.

Nissan Pulsar ST NRMA car review - Motoring - MyNRMA
A facelift at the end of 2003 gave the Pulsar a new grille and headlight clusters, while revised rear sheet metal contributed to increased boot space. The sedan is available in three models starting with the ST at $19,990, the ST-L at $20,990 and finally the Q at $23,490. An automatic transmission will set buyers back an additional $2,000. Standard features on the ST automatic sedan are power steering, airconditioning, cruise control, power mirrors, tilt adjustable steering wheel, CD player, Nissan anti-theft system and height adjustable driver's seat. Safety wise a driver's airbag is standard, but buyers wanting a passenger airbag will have to look to the Q, where it is standard fit, or the ST-L, where it is an option. On the inside the Pulsar has a lot to offer. Fit and finish is very good, with good quality materials used throughout the cabin. But no matter how good the quality, the abundance of black plastic in the interior, especially the door trims, reminds the buyer they have bought the entry level model. The front seats are quite comfortable, feeling a bit on the soft side, yet offering plenty of support. Rear seat passengers are well cared for, the deeply scalloped seat providing good support with reasonable head and leg room.
