Yet when Nissan introduced the current generation of the Sentra in 2000, the sportiest model was an SE with just 140 horsepower. Nissan shelved the SE last year in favor of two SE-R models, the standard model and the full-speed-ahead Spec V, which at over $17,000 trades some of its entry-level appeal in favor of more souped-up, sports sedan features.
2006 Nissan Sentra Prices and Review
A redesigned Sentra is expected in summer 2006 as a slightly early '07 debut. It's apparently been developed with French parent Renault, but Nissan stresses that underskin components will be its own work-and that Sentra will still be sourced from Japan, not France. Due sometime later is a hybrid version with a Nissan 4-cyl gasoline engine and Toyota-sourced electric-drive components. The next Sentra should be taller, longer and wider than the current model. That makes room for a smaller sedan and 2-dr hatchback that Nissan also confirms for '07. Sources say the hatchback will bow about the same time as the new Sentra, with the sedan following some six months later. Both will be built at Nissan's plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. No word yet on design and engineering, but the hatchback is said to be inspired by the Sport Concept model seen at various auto shows in early '05. Since so many vehicles look alike, the Consumer Guide(R) 2006 Nissan Sentra new-vehicle review includes an extensive photo gallery. The 2006 Nissan Sentra features a selection of interior and exterior images.

Unfortunately, Nissan has proven adept over the years at killing its stars, and the SE-R was not immune. When the Sentra was redesigned for 1995, the coupe was replaced by the relatively racey 200SX, and the SE-R package migrated to the new model. Nissan-like auto companies in general-has had trouble getting through its thick skull that some people actually want a four door with power and good moves. The 200SX flopped. Want better reliability information? Want to really know what difference it will make if you buy a Sentra SE-R Spec V rather than something else? It's coming in the form of "times in the shop" and "days in the shop" stats.
FreshAlloy.com: Nissan Sentra and SE-R
Nissan's most affordable car received a through re-design in 2000 after a few years as an ugly ducking in the late 90s. The new exterior was designed primarily by Nissan Design American (formerly Nissan Design International) and the interior by Nissan Design Europe. The Sentra comes in quite a few flavors; the XE (base), GXE (middle-of-the road), CA (ultra low emissions), SE (sportier), and more recently added SE-R (sportiest). Something to remember; the SE-R will replace the SE model in 2002. The Sentra also employs an independent front strut suspension along with a controversial rear suspension known as the multi-link beam with a section lateral link (according to Nissan, increases stability by minimizing camber change during cornering and improved noise isolation). While it's not as high tech as a fully independent double wishbone suspension, the suspension works surprising well.

Over the road, the Sentra delivers as advertised. The new rear suspension seems to exert a strong grip on the road, absorbing bumps, holes and ripples, and doesn't send much audible or vibrational evidence of its progress into the passenger compartment.
CanadianDriver: Used Vehicle Review - Nissan Sentra - 2000-2004
"Nice" isn't a word used to describe something that stands out in a crowd, which is why it's the perfect word to describe the 2001-2004 Nissan Sentra. Introduced in 2000 as a 2001 model, this was the fifth generation of Nissan bearing the Sentra nameplate, which has existed since the 1980s. During that time, it has earned a fair bit of respect but hasn't set many hearts afire. In just about every aspect, the Sentra is, indeed, nice. The exterior is inoffensive, if bland. The interior is comfortable, though this iteration of the Sentra has never been the most spacious in its class. Performance is adequate and all the controls do what they're meant to in a manner that makes this car feel safe. The most distinguished versions of this car were the sporty SE and SE-R models. Even if it didn't offer more interior space, this Sentra did offer its occupants a more pleasant place to spend their time than did the car it replaced. The ride was well controlled and struck a good balance between comfortable and firm, a compromise that many small cars fail to make. The seats are comfortable and give the car a more grown-up feel than other economy cars.
