X-TRAIL FCV is Latest in Nissan's Alternative Fuel Cell Technology
Nissan has been a pioneer in applying lithium-ion batteries to vehicles. As a result of long-term research, Nissan has succeeded in obtaining exceptionally high output characteristics and in developing a laminated lithium-ion cell in place of the conventional cylindrical shape. The use of a laminated cell as an automobile battery, which has a high current rate, requires larger terminals. Nissan's approach to technological development is that it must be useful, affordable, pragmatic and easy-to-use. One good example is the e-4WD system, an outgrowth of Nissan hybrid car research applied in the March and Cube. The e-4WD is a compact, lightweight four-wheel drive system. Sensors perceive the amount of slip in the front wheels, applying electricity as needed to an electric motor driving the rear wheels.

The gamble paid off, for the X-Trail proved resilient and capable in conditions that few owners will ever contemplate. Electronics also look after the four-wheel drive system, which Nissan calls All Mode 4x4. This is part-time 4WD, with the novel addition of sensors which can predict when drive to all four wheels is needed - other part-time systems react only once wheels have started spinning - and start shifting power from the front to the rear wheels before problems arise.

In the X-Trail Nissan has probably the best-driving compact sports utility on the road. It handles with great poise, and its pretty handy off-road too. Nissans All-Mode 4x4 system gives a choice of two-wheel drive, automatically selecting four-wheel drive and, for serious off-road action, a lock function that fixes the torque being sent to the front and rear axles. The X-Trail was facelifted in 2004.
